Could I have caught the STI / STD?

Yes, it is possible you caught the STI / STD, under the right circumstances. STIs / STDs (Sexually Transmitted Infections or Sexually Transmitted Diseases) can be transmitted when having sex—vaginal, anal, or oral. STIs / STDs are among the most frequent and contagious of diseases most commonly spread through sexual intercourse. The bacteria and viruses that cause STIs / STDs are found in semen, blood, vaginal secretions, and sometimes saliva. However some, like genital herpes and genital warts, can be spread through skin-to-skin contact.

Over 65 million Americans are now infected with an incurable STI / STD. Each year, 29 million more become infected with STIs / STDs, and almost 4 million of these are teenagers.

But we were using a condom!

Using latex condoms correctly each time you have sex and being in a mutually monogamous relationship with a partner can reduce your risks, however it’s not a guaranteed safety net. If your girlfriend or boyfriend got a positive STI / STD test, we would highly recommend getting STI / STD testing.

What are the STI / STD symptoms and effects?

Many STIs / STDs have no obvious symptoms or if any, are very mild ones. Yet no matter how minor the STI / STD symptoms are, they can still be harmful to you and your sexual partner(s). It’s important to get an STI / STD test and seek treatment as early as possible to restore your health as well as to stop the spread of the infection or disease to others.
