What is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a common STI caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. It can affect anyone, often without noticeable symptoms, which is why regular testing is so important for everyone’s health.

Symptoms

Chlamydia often doesn’t show symptoms, which is why testing is so essential.

When symptoms do appear, they can vary between women and men:

  • Vaginal discharge
  • Painful urination

If left untreated, Chlamydia can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). Symptoms include:

  • Low-grade fever
  • Non-menstrual bleeding
  • Painful intercourse
  • Lower abdominal pain

The symptoms of Chlamydia in men are:

  • Swollen or overly–sensitive testicles
  • Painful urination
  • Discharge from the penis
  • Rectal inflammation

In men, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea can spread to the epididymis, the tube that connects the testicle with the vas deferens. It can result in:

  • Blood in the semen
  • Discharge from the urethra (the opening at the end of the penis)
  • Discomfort in the lower abdomen or pelvis
  • Fever
  • Severe groin pain
  • Lump in the testicle
  • Pain during ejaculation
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Painful scrotal swelling (epididymis is enlarged)
  • Tender, swollen groin area on affected side
  • Testicle pain that worsens during a bowel movement

Our Chlamydia Testing Process

Chlamydia testing at CAPS Pregnancy + Medical Clinics is simple, quick, and private to ensure your comfort and peace of mind.

Testing is quick and simple, with a urine test using a sample of your first-stream urine. If you’re experiencing symptoms in other areas, such as the mouth or anus, we can connect you to trusted low-cost clinics for additional care.

The good news is that Chlamydia can be easily treated with a simple, one-time dose of antibiotics once detected through testing.
