What is HIV?
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, a serious virus that weakens the body’s immune system, potentially leading to AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) if left untreated.
HIV is most often spread through vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can also spread by sharing needles with an infected person or through direct contact with infected blood, such as through an open cut or wound. HIV is transmitted through “fluid to fluid” contact, meaning the virus is passed when an infected person’s fluids come in contact with the mucous membranes or bloodstream of another person.
Birth control methods (other than condoms) do not protect against HIV. HIV cannot be prevented by pills, injections, patches, or IUDs.
